May is National Water Safety Month, and the perfect time to get children involved in swim lessons. The YMCA of Montclair has updated its lessons to increase the accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels.
The 2017 SunKissed Invitational Junior/Senior Swimming Championships of the USA was held from March 31 – April 2, 2017. Fifty-eight Dolphins swimmers were among the 600 swimmers from 18 teams who competed in the meet. As a team, the Dolphins placed 4th, up from 7th in 2016.
Registration is now open for the Montclair Run, a family friendly event on June 4, 2017 that includes a 10K and a 2 Mile fun run/walk.
The YMCA of Montclair will host approximately 65 athletes from three teams representing Livingston, Caldwell, and Wayne for the Essex County Special Olympics Swim Meet on March 18, 2017.
Twenty one Montclair YMCA Dolphins ages 12 and under competed in the NJ YMCA State Championships on February 25 & 26, 2017 at the Ocean County YMCA. The team posting great results and Howard Zhuang was crowned the 2017 State Champion in the 10 & under 100 breaststroke.
For the past several weekends, the Montclair YMCA Dolphins have been competing in championship meets that provide swimmers with additional opportunities to qualify for the 2017 NJ YMCA State Championships.
Thirty-three of our youngest Dolphins competed in the New Jersey YMCA 8 & Under Swimming Championships on February 5, 2017. Nineteen of these swimmers finished in the top 20 in their races including 9 who had one or more top 10 finishes.
Eighty-four Montclair YMCA Dolphins swimmers competed at the DeNunzio Natatorium at Princeton University in an invitational swim meet sponsored by the Princeton Tiger Aquatic Club, Jan. 21-22. Over a quarter of the Dolphins who entered to compete achieved top ten finishes.

The YMCA of Montclair, in partnership with the National Youth Recovery Foundation and Partners for Health Foundation, will launch three 12-week programs geared to adults between the ages of 18 and 30 in long-term recovery. Sixty-two Montclair Dolphins swimmers earned 233 top 20 finishes at the OCY Winter Classic swim meet and 94% of the swimmers saw improvements in their times.
Fifty-five of the youngest Montclair YMCA Dolphins competed against swimmers from 9 other YMCA teams in the First Frost U12 meet. Twenty of these mighty young Dolphins turned in 45 top 10 finishes.
130 YMCA of Montclair Dolphins ages 9 – 17 competed in the 2016 Ocean County YMCA Great Turkey Invitational swim meet. Our swimmers achieved personal bests in multiple events and 47 Dolphins ages 9-17 turned in 160 top 10 finishes in individual events.
The YMCA of Montclair will hold trainings to help educate and support the community regarding mental health. The first Adult Mental Health First Aid training on October 15 is free and focuses on mental health challenges common among adults such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
The YMCA of Montclair will host its Open House Week Thursday, September 15 through Sunday, September 18 at both branches. In addition, their FREE Family Day is September 18, 12-4 p.m.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the YMCA of Montclair a $3,000 grant to support summer literacy, specifically ACE: Academic Camp Experience. This local grant award is part of over $7.1 million in grants awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.
The Park Street Branch Large Pool will be closed from June 6 through June 26 while we install our new HVAC unit. We know that the closure will be inconvenient, but we are doing everything we can to make it as seamless as possible by providing ample alternatives while the Large Pool project is in progress.
The 2016 YMCA Short Course National Swimming Championships were held from April 4-8 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina. Top swimmers from 80 teams competed at this meet. Our team of Cha O’Leary (17) of Montclair and Emily and Hannah O’Halloran (both 17) of Glen Ridge represented the YMCA of Montclair. Despite being unable to compete during the first few days due to illness, O’Leary managed to place 2nd in the preliminary heat of the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time. That same evening, she finished in 3rd place in the finals of the 100 breast, with a new New Jersey Swimming state record and best time of 1:02.03.
The YMCA of Montclair and the Montclair Recreation Department will sponsor their 34th Montclair Run on Sunday, June 5. It's a fun family day to benefit the community. The event features a 2 mile fun run/walk and a 10K (6.2 mile) road race.
On Saturday, April 30, the YMCA of Montclair is holding its annual Healthy Kids Day® celebration as part of the Welcome To Walnut Street Fair in Montclair. Healthy Kids Day is a free community event to inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active.
April is Child Sexual Abuse Awareness Month. Together we can prevent child sexual abuse by ensuring that adults have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly. YMCAs across the country will join together in taking Five Days of Action from April 4-8, 2016, to increase awareness in communities.
The YMCA of Montclair Dolphins joined the 23 other YMCA swim teams in New Jersey to compete in the 2016 NJ YMCA State Swimming Championships on February 26-28 at the Ocean County YMCA in Toms River and on March 10-13 at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. 46 Dolphins achieved the challenging qualifying times during the course of this season and competed against the fastest Y swimmers in the State.
Come to camp at our Y. We have 12 camps and lots of experiences to choose from for campers ages 2-15. Registration opens March 19 at 8 am (unless otherwise noted).
At the NJ YMCA Silver Championships held February 19-21 at GCIT in Sewell, NJ, 1,344 swimmers from 29 New Jersey YMCAs competed for the top spots at the Silver level and to see who would qualify to go on to the NJ YMCA State Championships in March. 11 of the 63 swimmers from the Montclair YMCA Dolphins qualified in 14 events for the Y State Championships, bringing the Montclair YMCA Dolphins State Championship team to 51 swimmers. Five swimmers qualified to compete in the 2016 Sunkissed Invitational Junior/Senior Championships of the USA to be held in Charlotte, NC in April.
The Ocean County YMCA held its annual Strong Kids Invitational swim meet on December 11 -13 in Toms River. Over 800 swimmers from 10 teams including 100 Montclair YMCA Dolphins competed in this annual scholarship fundraiser meet. The Montclair Y’s swimmers competed in a total of 630 events. 66 Dolphins swimmers placed in the top 20 in 235 events compared to 41 swimmers in 140 events last year.
130 YMCA of Montclair Dolphins ages 9 – 17 competed in the 2015 Ocean County YMCA Great Turkey Invitational swim meet. By the conclusion of the meet on Sunday, the Montclair Y swimmers had achieved personal bests in multiple events and 51 Dolphins ages 9-17 had turned in 145 top 10 finishes in individual events, as compared to 30 swimmers in 83 events last year.
The YMCA of Montclair Dolphins Swim Team kicked off their new season on Saturday with the Black/Red Meet, a scrimmage for new and younger swimmers on the team. Coming off of a long-course season full of notable accomplishments, the Dolphins are anxious to get the season going and work on the skills that will yield more success come the short-course championship season.

Montclair YMCA and Madison YMCA hosted a meet dubbed the M&M Summer LC Meet at the DeNunzio Natatorium on the campus of Princeton University on July 11 & 12. Over 1000 swimmers, ages 8-21, comprising 22 teams competed at the meet. Two more Montclair YMCA Dolphins qualified to swim at the 2015 YMCA National Long Course Championships. Seven younger swimmers qualified in additional events for the NJ Swimming 2015 Long Course Junior Olympics.
35 of the fastest Montclair YMCA Dolphins swimmers competed in the Jeffrey S Mace Memorial Summer Sizzle XXV, one of the fastest meets of the long course season. The Dolphins came away with 6 medals, a new team record, two National Team swimmers who each qualified for another event at the 2015 YMCA Long Course National Swimming Championships and two relay teams that made the cut for the Y Nationals. In addition, two younger swimmers qualified in events for the NJ Junior Olympics.
On Father’s Day, the Montclair YMCA Dolphins Swim Team hosted a long-course meet. 54 of the 100 Dolphins who participated in the meet achieved 107 top 10 finishes. 19 swimmers finished in the top 3 in 25 individual events.

The 2015 YMCA LC Cup Championship hosted by Somerset Valley YMCA was held at the DeNunzio Natatorium on the campus of Princeton University from June 5-7, 2015. 23 YMCA teams competed in this highly competitive meet. Montclair YMCA Dolphin swimmers posted 86 top 20 finishes. 15 Dolphins swimmers had 28 top 10 finishes.
The Montclair YMCA Dolphins Swim Team travelled to Princeton on May 16 and 17 to compete in the Princeton Tigers Aquatic Club’s 2015 Tiger Challenge. Competing in the first meet of the year in a 50 meter (long course) pool against over 800 swimmers representing 17 other teams, 21 of the 84 competing Dolphins, ages 9-18, achieved one or more top ten finishes.

One of the highlights of the short course swim season for the Montclair YMCA Dolphins Swim Team is the SunKissed Invitational Junior/Senior Swimming Championships of the USA, which are held each Spring at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. For Dolphin swimmers, achieving the necessary qualifying times for the meet and attending for the first time is a rite of passage as they grow into stronger and faster swimmers.
On Saturday, May 2, the YMCA of Montclair is holding its annual Healthy Kids Day® celebration. This year's event will take place as part of the neighborhood's Welcome To Walnut Street Fair. Healthy Kids Day is a free community event to inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active. Healthy Kids Day features games, information and interactive tables that represent the theme “Mind, Body and Camp Spirit”. There will also be music, face painting, parachute games, and more.
The 2015 NJ YMCA State Championships yielded two State Champions in three events and many best times. 35 Montclair YMCA Dolphins swimmers ages 9-18 competed in the State Championships. Eleven Dolphins earned 30 top 20 finishes including State Champions Cha O’Leary (16) of Montclair in the 100 yd breaststroke and 200 yd breaststroke and Avery Best (11) of Montclair in the 50 yd backstroke.
On Saturday, March 21, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., the YMCA of Montclair will host approximately 60 athletes from four teams representing Livingston, Caldwell, Newark and Wayne for the Essex County Special Olympics Swim Meet. This will be the second time the YMCA of Montclair is home to a Special Olympics New Jersey Swim Meet.

Over 1500 swimmers from 30 clubs competed in 124 events. Montclair YMCA had a 12th place finish over all. Dolphin swimmers in the combined 15-19 age group achieved a fourth place finish among the 30 participating clubs.

Twenty four of the youngest members of the Montclair YMCA Dolphin Swim Team competed in the NJ YMCA 8 and Under State Championships on February 7 and 8 at the Raritan Valley Community College pool. 13 Dolphins achieved 24 top 20 finishes, including top 10 finishes in individual events by Cooper O’Brien (6) of Montclair, Aly Breikaa (8), Justin Cueva (8) and Ryan LoCicero (8) of Bloomfield and Kazuri Lateef (8) of West Orange.
The YMCA of Montclair is hosting a series of events in celebration of Black History Month that are open to the community. In addition, several community members who enhance knowledge, awareness and relationships across boundaries will be featured in a poster display at the Park Street Branch in February.
The Montclair YMCA Dolphin Swim Team competed at the Tiger Invitational swim meet hosted by the Princeton Tigers Aquatic Club on January 17th and 18th. 32 Montclair Dolphins achieved 66 top 20 finishes.
Fourteen swimmers from the Montclair YMCA's National Team competed at a the MR Condors Long Course Qualifier meet in New City, New York over the same weekend. Five Dolphins achieved nine top 20 finishes. Top ten finishes included a 1st place finish by Cha O'Leary in the 200 m breaststroke and a 10th place finishes in the 100m free and 50m free (prelim) by Charles Cobbertt of Orange.
The Eastern Express Holiday Classic XXVII was held at the Sonny Werblin Pool on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ from December 12 -14. The Montclair YMCA Dolphins sent 18 of their fastest swimmers who qualified to swim in this meet. Cha O’Leary (16) of Montclair took first place in the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke events, setting new team records in both events and a meet record in the 100 with a time of 1 minute 2.76 seconds. Cha has qualified to swim in the USA Junior Nationals in both events. Cha also finished 4th in the 400 yard individual medley event.
The Ocean County YMCA held its annual Strong Kids Invitational swim meet on December 12 -14 in Toms River. Dolphins finishing in the top 5 in one or more events included Avery Best (11) and Mia Padberg (12) of Montclair, Dom Ancey (10) and Samantha Cortez (17) of Belleville, Tracey Collins (17) and Ellie Felber (9) of Bloomfield, Courtney Munro (17) of Cedar Grove, Skyler Segal (12) and Conner Townson (10) of Glen Ridge, Jordan Shaffer (15) of Verona, Tracey Gorab (15) of Wayne, and Alina Chant (13) and Nicholas Santa Cruz (18) of West Orange.
Twenty-four of the youngest Montclair YMCA Dolphins competed against 220 other swimmers in the First Frost 9 and under Mini-Meet on Sunday, November 23 at the Raritan Valley Community College Aquatic Center in Lamington, NJ. Nine teams from the region competed in this annual event hosted by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. Ranging in age from 6 to 8, 13 of these mighty young Dolphins turned in 28 top 20 finishes.
Thanks to you we raised $2,742 on Giving Tuesday. Your donations mean more kids have the chance to thrive in Y programs. A generous donor doubled the first $2,500, making the total amount raised $5,242.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To help educate the community about breast cancer awareness and prevention, the Y hosted a talk by Dr. Nancy Elliot. The talk included topics such as individualized treatment, lifestyle choices to reduce risk and advanced technology for detection.

Dolphin swimmers posted nine new qualifying times for the 2014 National YMCA Long Course Swimming Championships at the 2014 Jeffrey S. Mace Memorial Summer Sizzle invitational swim meet held June 27-29 on the campus of Rutgers University, including new qualifiers Charles Cobbert (16) of Orange and Hayden Kucharski (18) of Bloomfield, and Emily and Hannah O’Halloran of Glen Ridge (both 16) and Cha O’Leary (16) of Montclair who qualified for additional events.
The YMCA of Montclair elected three new members to its volunteer Board of Directors. Each will serve a three-year term.

The first-ever Summer Sparks Camp from the YMCA of Montclair will run June 23–August 8 at the Forest Avenue School in Verona. The program is for kids entering 1st through 6th grade. This enrichment camp will inspire campers with a variety of activities and a very flexible schedule.
The 32nd Annual Montclair Run was held on June 1, 2014. The event featured a 2 mile fun run/walk and a 10K (6.2 mile) road race. Other events included a health fair, sports massages, a DJ spinning tunes, games for kids and a moonwalk. The event was a success with a total of 1028 runners, a 13% increase over last year’s run. Thanks to everyone who came out to run and support the runners and to our sponsors.
The Montclair YMCA Dolphins Swim Team travelled to Princeton on May 17 and 18 to compete in the Princeton Tigers Aquatic Club’s 2014 Tiger Challenge. Over 35 swimmers took to the pool at the YMCA of Montclair on April 11 to help other kids in their community. The swimmers participated in the Swim for Kids swim challenge to raise $5,000 for the Y’s Annual Campaign.

The YMCA of Montclair announces donations of $75,000 to fund the construction of a new senior/teen center. The senior/teen center is funded in part by a $30,000 grant from the Partners for Health Foundation. Gifts also include $5,000 from the Investors Foundation (which supports nonprofits in the communities served by Investors Bank), and private donations from Jacqueline McMullen and the Sauer family in memory of John Sauer.
