MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The Montclair Makos water polo team, led by Head Coach Chris Kelsch and Assistant Coaches Daniel Arbelaez and Thatcher Smith, wrapped up its fall season with strong participation, competitive matchups, and clear signs of growth for the program’s young athletes.
Launched this fall by the YMCA of Montclair, the competitive water polo program drew 25 players in its inaugural season. Under Kelsch’s leadership, the Makos focused on fundamentals, teamwork, and building confidence in game play while competing against established regional programs, including Princeton PTAC, Brooklyn Hustle, and St. Benedict’s.
A highlight of the season came in the team’s final match, when the 12U squad earned a win against Brooklyn Hustle, a milestone moment reflecting how much the players had developed over the course of the season.
“Watching the kids grow—not just in skill, but in confidence and teamwork—has been incredibly rewarding,” said Chris Kelsch. “They showed up ready to learn, work hard, and support one another every step of the way.”
Three Makos players — Ariyan Kaushik, Theo Kelsch, and Owen Brown — also had the opportunity to gain experience at a higher level by joining forces with the Princeton team at the Beast of the East tournament weekend in Orlando, Florida, held at the conclusion of the season. Competing in the 12U division, the combined team finished fifth overall after competing against teams across the East Coast ranging from Greenwich CT to Miami FL.
Building on the momentum from a successful summer clinic and fall launch, the program is now looking ahead. The Makos plan to kick off another season in the spring (March–June), which will include opportunities for athletes to participate in USA Water Polo and American Water Polo–sanctioned competition tournaments as part of the seasonal schedule.
Stay tuned for more news and updates — and if your swimmer is interested in trying a competitive team sport, water polo offers a fast-paced, challenging, and rewarding option. Learn more about the Montclair Makos Water Polo Team.
