At the YMCA of Montclair, our community health and wellness programs for adults with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease are overseen by certified instructors with specialized training to help manage these specific health issues.
Financial assistance is available for individuals who reside in Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Clifton, Glen Ridge, Montclair, and Verona with demonstrated need.
Stay active & independent for life – sail

Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is an evidence-based fall prevention program centered around a strength, balance and fitness program for adults 65 and older. SAIL classes are offered 2-3 times a week as a one-hour class, and the exercises can be done standing or sitting.

Enhance® Fitness

Each Enhance® Fitness class session includes cardiovascular, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises and the fostering of strong social relationships between participants. This class is geared toward older adults. Modified exercises are available for those with chronic conditions, such as arthritis. Participants can use chairs for support, if necessary, and increase the weight they use for strength training at their own pace.

Prevent T2 Diabetes Prevention

The Y’s Prevent T2 Diabetes Prevention Program, sponsored by the Department of Health, is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s curriculum. The program is proven to assist adults with prediabetes in preventing or delaying the development of type 2 diabetes. Participants must meet certain requirements such as being 18+ and prediabetic. Parkinson’s Exercise Program

This is an exercise and educational program for individuals with Parkinson’s. This group exercise instruction is led by a Certified Personal Trainer according to recommendations from the Parkinson’s Foundation and the American College of Sports Medicine. This 45-minute class includes an appropriate warm-up, aerobic activity, strength training, balance and agility movements, and stretching. Supervision and modification will focus on safety and the individual experience. This group exercise class is for anyone with Parkinson’s or a related movement disorder, or anyone interested in an adaptive form of exercise.
