We are deeply saddened by the passing of Helen Geyer on August 31, 2017 at age 99. Mrs. Geyer served for many years as a valuable member of the YMCA of Montclair community.
Over the years she served on the Ladies Auxiliary in addition to helping with many other special events. She was a great connector who encouraged other people in the community to give their time and funds to the Y in addition to funding several projects herself over the years.
As someone who was very involved in the Y – from classes in the gym including a golf class back in the day, to dancing programs and the social activities, Mrs. Geyer believed the Y helped her stay young.
One of her most significant contributions to the YMCA of Montclair was the funding of the 159 Glenridge Avenue property renovation. In 2007, the branch of the YMCA intended to serve our youth population was officially named the Helen & Bill Geyer Family Center of the Montclair YMCA.
“I thought it was a perfect idea because it would take care of the younger generations with their families,” said Mrs. Geyer in 2011. It turned out beautifully and I’m really proud of the results.”
Today, the Geyer Family Branch offers programming for kids ages 6 months to 6 years old.
Mrs. Geyer never hesitated to give back to the Y and this community. In 2011, she said “I think it’s great to give back. If you receive it’s wonderful to give. You get a great deal of satisfaction out of that.”
We give many thanks to Mrs. Geyer for being such an active part of the Y community and her philanthropic spirit. Her legacy will live on.
Please join us in extending our deepest condolences to Mrs. Geyer’s family.
