The YMCA of Montclair and the Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department are pleased to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Montclair Run, which has become a popular race tradition in the Greater Montclair community.
This year’s race, set for Sunday June 4, 2017, promises to be just as successful as last year’s, which drew a crowd of over 1,400 runners, walkers and volunteers.
“This is an incredible event and we’re making a few enhancements this year,” says Washima Redding, Senior Health and Wellness Director at the YMCA of Montclair. Washima took over as race co-director from Carol Kearney who recently retired from the YMCA. “Before heading into retirement, Carol ensured that the race became certified, so we’re making minor changes to our 10K route to meet those requirements. Second, advance registration will be online only. Third, participants can use online tools to help raise funds for scholarships individually or with a team.”
“The Montclair Run appeals to runners and walkers of all abilities,” says Pat Brechka, the Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department Director and race co-director. “It’s a family friendly event that helps promote a healthy lifestyle. And, participants are raising money for a good cause that supports the community.”
For the 2017 race, all runners must register online prior to midnight on May 29. Online registration is now open.
In person registration is available at Fleet Feet Sports, 603 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair (cash or check only) Fri., June 2, 12:00-7:00pm and Sat. June 3, 10:00am-5:00pm. Same day in person registration is available at the YMCA of Montclair, 25 Park Street, Montclair (cash or check only) from 7-9am on race day.
Funds raised make it possible for the YMCA of Montclair to fulfill its mission to strengthen individuals, families, and community by developing spirit, mind, and body. The YMCA of Montclair offers financial assistance for childcare, summer camp, membership, and other programs to ensure opportunities for everyone to grow and thrive. The Montclair Run also makes it possible for the Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department to offer scholarships for those in need in the community.
In addition to the two races, there will be a health and wellness fair, sports massages, music, activities for kids, and a moonwalk.
Both the YMCA and the Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department are dedicated to helping the community improve their health and wellness. The Montclair Run is a great way for everyone to kick off the start of the summer. More than 1,400 runners, walkers, volunteers, and spectators of all ages are expected to participate.

This year’s 10K run lead sponsor is the Bravitas Group Inc. They are longtime generous supporters of the YMCA. “Because the Y is there to serve the needs of the community, we want to be there for the Y so they have the resources to do just that,” says Rhonda Silver of the Bravitas Group, who also serves on the YMCA Board of Directors.
“We have many wonderful sponsors who support us year after year,” says YMCA of Montclair CEO Jo Ann Short. “We couldn’t do all that we do to strengthen the community without their support.”
