Thirty-three young dolphins, ranging from ages 6 – 8 competed in the New Jersey YMCA 8 & Under Swimming Championships on February 5th at the Raritan Valley Community College pool. 19 little Dolphins finished in the top 20 in their races including 9 who had one or more top 10 finishes. They are: Bowen Brownstein (7), Kyle Dripchak (8), Melanie Dripchak (8), Maeve Rodgers (6), Noah Rodgers (8) of Montclair, Caitlin Hood (7), Charles Loeb (8) and William Pearce (7) of Glen Ridge, and Maya Zidziunas of West Orange.
Melanie Dripchak medalled in three events with a silver in the 25 free and the 100 IM and a bronze in the 25 fly. Her brother, Kyle Dripchak, took bronze medals in two events; the 25 free and the 25 back. Charles Loeb also received a bronze medal in the 25 breast.
Matt Garifo, head Age-Group coach said, “This was a great opportunity for our youngest swimmers to get experience at a big championship meet. Their hard work showed in their results and we are very proud of them!”
The YMCA of Montclair Dolphins swim team offers a year-round opportunity for competitive swimming in both YMCA and USA Swimming competitions as well as seasonal instructional clinics for aspiring competitive athletes. The team is comprised of girls and boys from age 6 through high school. More than 200 athletes train with the team each year. They compete at all levels, based on their skill set.
